This disease is a problem of public health to Burundi and to the world; 8 million people are infected each year including 2 million death annually. Nearly 70% of the cases of tuberculosis are in sub-Saharan Africa. There is also a problem of co-infection of the HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is also the first cause of death in the adults infected by the HIV/AIDS. One out of three adults infected by the HIV will develop tuberculosis. In Burundi, more than 6.000 cases are notified each year. Tuberculosis is a handicapping chronic disease of long date, shaming and stigmatizing.
The Sanatorium of Kibumbu is a hospital specialized in the treatment of tuberculosis.
