The capital of Tyrol staged the Olympic Wintergames in 1964 and 1976 and has ever since been an important sports center. The inauguration celebration of the IX Olympic winter games on January 29th, 1964 in the Bergisel stadium of Innsbruck with more than 60.000 spectators was a great success. On January 29th Federal President Adolf Schärf opened the IX Olympiad at Bergisel stadium of Innsbruck, where more than 1300 sportsmen from 36 nations participated.
