Famous paintings

Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510)

Botticelli, Sandro, real name Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, one of the leading painters of the Florentine Renaissance. He developed a highly personal style characterized by elegant execution, a sense of melancholy, and a strong emphasis on line; details appear as sumptuous still lifes. Botticelli was born in Florence, the son of a tanner. His nickname was derived from Botticello ("little barrel").

Francisco de Goya (1746-1828)

Considered to be "the Father of Modern Art," began his painting career just after the late Baroque period. In expressing his thoughts and feelings frankly, as he did, he became the pioneer of new artistic tendencies which were to come to fruition in the 19th century.

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)

Johannes Vermeer created luscious canvases of limited scope: generally women and men in seventeenth-century rooms, but also occasional outdoor scenes, allegory and religious themes. The fascination lies with the intricate combination of light, color, proportion and scale that enhances the moods and reality of the subjects.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919

Born in Limoges and brought up in Paris, where his father, a tailor with a large family, settled in 1845. From the age of thirteen he worked as an apprentice painter, painting flowers on porcelain plates. This early apprenticeship left a certain trace on his art, which was always decorative in spite of its later realism. After machines for coloring ceramics had been introduced, he had to switch to decorating fans and screens. Having saved some money, in 1862 Renoir entered the Atelier Gleyre and there made friends with Monet, Sisley and Bazille; some time later he met Pissarro and Cézanne.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)

Began his artistic studies under Jacob I.van Swanenburch, a history painter who had spent some time in Italy. It was in Swanenburch's crowded studio that Rembrandt first learned about the great Italian masters of the Renaissance. After three years apprenticeship having learned the basics of painting technique, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam where he continued to study in the studio of Pieter Lastman (1583 - 1633).

Diego Velazques (1599-1660)

Combined in his paintings sensitivity to the life he observed around him with a palette at once full of light and richness. Whether painting the most humble beggar, the landscapes of Spain and Italy, or the children of Spain's royal family, Velazquez created art unequalled in his generation.
