Hugo van der Goes was one of the Masters of the Flemish school. Born in Goes (The Netherlands), he painted mainly in Ghent (Belgium) where he was listed as a member of the painters' guild from 1467. His religious paintings focused mainly on the Holy Family. His work is characterized by his attention to detail, delicate craftsmanship, and deep religious sentiment. Among his works are the “Portinani Altarpiece” (c. 1476), “Virgin and Child With St. Anne,” and “Death of the Virgin” (1480). He also designed numerous stained glass windows.
