Garamba National Park, 1984

Garamba National Park (4.900 sq.km), one of the oldest in Africa was established in 1938. It is the only place in Congo with a population of the endangered sub-species Northern White Rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum cottoni and the Congo Giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis congoensis. The park's immense savannahs, grasslands and woodlands, interspersed with gallery forests along the riverbanks and the swampy depressions, are home to four large mammals: the elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus and above all the white rhinoceros. Though much larger than the black rhino, it is harmless; only some 30 individuals remain.

"Garamba National Park" was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 1980.
